When people (and even some doctors) first hear about the ketogenic lifestyle and ketosis, they often get ketosis confused with ketoacidosis – a life threatening health challenge. In order to explain, the difference we reached out to Keto Expert Dr. Malia Haleakala.
Here is what Dr. Malia had to say:
When you mention ketosis or ketoacidosis to medical doctors, most of us instantly think of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a serious and sometimes fatal disease in people with diabetes. Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs because of high blood sugar & the inability to properly use insulin, which triggers insulin release and a vicious cycle, including ketoacidosis. These people are sick. They feel horrible, with abdominal pain and vomiting.
With nutritional ketoacidosis, or our keto diet, we are low carb, and thus have normal blood sugar. We feel better than ever, with increased energy. BIG difference!
